  • Yield: 1 watermelon volcano
  • Diet: Vegetarian

Description

A fun and educational activity combining science and creativity, resulting in a colorful eruption that resembles a volcano, perfect for kids and families.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium or large seedless watermelon
  • 1/2 cup baking soda
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar
  • 2-3 tablespoons dish soap
  • Food coloring (red, orange, or any color)
  • Optional: Eco-friendly glitter
  • Optional: Essential oils for scent
  • Reusable squeeze bottles for vinegar
  • Tray or kiddie pool to contain mess

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Watermelon: Slice a small round opening off the top of the watermelon and scoop out the insides, saving them for later. Carve out a deep well in the center.
  2. Add the Color: Add a few drops of food coloring to the inside of the watermelon and swirl it around for a lava-like look.
  3. Pour in the Dish Soap: Add 2-3 tablespoons of dish soap to the center of the watermelon.
  4. Add Baking Soda: Scoop in 1/2 cup of baking soda and press it down lightly.
  5. Get Ready to Erupt: Quickly pour in 1/2 cup of vinegar and watch the explosion. For a slower reaction, add vinegar gradually. Add more baking soda and vinegar to repeat the eruption.

Notes

Use a large watermelon for bigger eruptions. Try different food coloring combinations for unique lava effects. Sprinkle eco-friendly glitter on top for extra fun.
