Description

Delightful soft cut-out sugar cookies perfect for any occasion, easily customizable for decoration.

Ingredients

  • 2 and 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • Royal Icing or Easy Glaze Icing
  • Assorted sprinkles

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set it aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar on high speed until the mixture is light and creamy, about 3 minutes. Add the egg, vanilla, and almond extract (if using), and mix until well combined.
  3. Mix in the dry ingredients on low speed until the dough comes together. Adjust with more flour if the dough is too sticky.
  4. Divide the dough in half. Roll each portion to about 1/4-inch thickness on a floured piece of parchment paper. Refrigerate the dough for at least 2 hours.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (177°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Cut the chilled dough into shapes using cookie cutters. Reroll scraps as needed. Place the cookies on prepared sheets, leaving about 3 inches between each one.
  7. Bake for 11 to 12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned. Let cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack.
  8. Once cool, decorate with icing and sprinkles. Allow icing to set before serving.
  9. Store leftovers in a covered container at room temperature or refrigerate for longer storage.

Notes

Refrigerating the dough helps maintain shape while baking. Experiment with different flavors and colors for decoration.
