Description

Create a colorful lava lamp in a bottle using simple household items. A fun science experiment for all ages.

Ingredients

  • Clear plastic or glass bottle (empty)
  • Vegetable oil or baby oil
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Alka-Seltzer tablets

Instructions

  1. Fill the bottle about 1/4 full with water.
  2. Add a few drops of food coloring to the water.
  3. Fill the rest of the bottle with vegetable oil or baby oil, leaving some space at the top.
  4. Once the oil and water separate, break an Alka-Seltzer tablet into pieces and drop them into the bottle one at a time.
  5. Watch the colorful blobs rise and fall like a lava lamp!

Notes

Store the lava lamp in a cool, dry place. The effect will need more Alka-Seltzer for a repeat performance.
