Ingredients
- 1 cup small white tapioca pearls, uncooked
- 5 cups water
- Food coloring gel or liquid (multiple colors)
- Optional: flavored drink mix powder (Kool-Aid, fruit punch, etc.)
- Optional: sugar syrup or fruit juice for flavoring
Instructions
- Bring 5 cups of water to a boil in a saucepan.
- Add 1 cup of tapioca pearls and stir gently.
- Boil for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pearls become mostly translucent.
- Turn off the heat and cover the pot. Let it sit for an additional 15 minutes.
- Drain the pearls through a mesh strainer and rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process.
- Separate the pearls into different bowls if making multiple colors.
- In small bowls, mix the tapioca pearls with a few drops of food coloring or drink mix powder for flavor and color.
- Let them sit for 10-15 minutes to absorb the colors, stirring occasionally.
- Rinse the pearls briefly again and use them in drinks, as edible sensory bins, or decorations on cakes.
- Store in the fridge in an airtight container with water for up to 2 days.
Notes
Stir the pearls while boiling to prevent sticking. Experiment with different colors and flavors. For a sweeter treat, drizzle sugar syrup or fruit juice.
